Social security contributions are compulsory for all foreign workers in Spain, whether employed or self employed. By paying the system provides you with a range of medical and financial coverage with the same level of protection as a Spanish National. You pay around 6.4% of the monthly wage and the state contributes around 20%.
Under the EU it is now possible to retain part of your home social security scheme for a limited period of time (FORM 101 - available from a UK post office) and to extend by a further year (FORM-102 - available from a UK post office). After 2 years in Spain you must be legally making Social Security payments.
Your Spanish employer should register you with Spanish Social Security (Seguridad Social). It is possible to register yourself by going to the local Social Security office and presenting the following information
- Proof you are employed in Spain
- Passport, plus marriage certificate and birth certificates of any dependants if applicable
- Proof of residence (titled deeds to a property or rental agreement)
It is best to provide the office with translations of all of the above. After 1 or 2 months you should receive a registration card (Cartillia de la seguridad social or tarjeta sanitaria) in the post.
