When finding work it is important you get a contract customized to suit you and your employer depending on the term. Terms can be 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, seasonal, indefinite or one year contracts depending on the nature of the job. These are usually written in Spanish so it’s worth getting them translated before signing. The important thing here is to discuss your contract and your entitlements with your prospective employer.
Fringe Benefits include:
- Health Cover
- Workmen’s Compensation
- Unemployment
- Retirement
The Minimum Wage in Spain does not enforce a minimum wage, which from July 2004 was set at 513 euros per month. Many employees enjoy 15 payments per year with double payment at Easter and Christmas and in August.
Termination of Contract
Depending upon the length of employment you may be granted severance pay “finiquito” which is the equivalent to the wages of 45 days per worked year.
Wrongful dismissal
Employees are entitled to present a demand for conciliation within 20 days. This is a prejudicial process reliant on an agreement between the parties. If no agreement is reached you may place a ‘suit’ before the labour Court (Juzgado De Lo Social) within 20 days. If the court rules in your favor you could receive 45 days compensation.
